Politics, Religion, Military and whatever else I think of

These are my thoughts about the world. I am a staff sergeant in the Army, so of course I have an opinion. Hope you enjoy, or at the very least, think.

Guantanamo

Someday I hope someone who actually served in Guantanamo as a guard will have the time and ability to write a book from the viewpoint of the soldiers down there, but in the meantime, I will write a little thought. And since I was a guard there for 10 months, I think I have a little bit of knowledge about what went on there, at least while I was there.
The reason I am writing this is because of a recent episode of Boston Legal (which I enjoy very much.) However, the writers are clearly uninformed when it comes to issues that they have a political viewpoint on. Guantanamo is a great example.
I am not going to go into the whole debate about whether there is torture going on in GTMO, because so many on the left consider interrogation techniques to be torture. Waterboarding, sleep deprivation, etc. are all torture to the left. Well, let me just say that as a soldier if I am ever captured I hope I am treated half as well as the detainees at GTMO. 3 hot meals a day prepared to religious specifications. Dental and medical treatment that is better and quicker than what the soldiers get. Oh, and daily showers and recreation time.
Lets examine how American soldiers are treated by our enemies: they are tortured and beheaded. Hmm.
The left also yells about following the Geneva Convention when it comes to the detainees. Lets look at the Geneva Convention:
"The penal provisions promulgated by the Occupying Power in accordance with Articles 64 and 65 may impose the death penalty on a protected person only in cases where the person is guilty of espionage, of serious acts of sabotage against the military installations of the Occupying Power or of intentional offences which have caused the death of one or more persons, provided that such offences were punishable by death under the law of the occupied territory in force before the occupation began."
So if an individual would be subject to death for an action, such as spying, he could be put to death. He could also be put to death if he is caught fighting out of uniform against a uniformed army and therefore subject to being labeled a spy.
Since all of the detainees were caught out of uniform fighting against uniformed American troops they could have been charged as spies and executed on the spot. Instead, the American government classified them as "enemy combatants" and allowed them to escape the initial possibility of being classified a spy and killed on the spot.

So those who think the detainees at Guantanamo are being treated poorly? They aren't.
For those who think torture occurs at GTMO? It doesn't (unless you think every interrogation tactic used is torture...)
And for those poor detainees that are locked up for fighting against American forces out of uniform? they are lucky they weren't shot on the spot under the Geneva Convention rules.
